10 KiCad Tips That Changed My PCB Design
KiCad has grown into a world-class EDA tool. Whether you are an amateur or professional, here are 10 life-changing tips to level up your workflow in KiCad 7.
1. Master Interactive Router Settings
KiCad's interactive router is incredibly smart. Use the Push-and-Shove mode to automatically route around existing traces. Press E to customize routing behavior.
2. Use Hierarchical Sheets
For complex boards, do not put everything on a single schematic. Use Hierarchical Sheets to segment power supplies, sensors, and MCUs into distinct blocks.
3. Use Keyboard Shortcuts
- W — Start routing trace
- V — Place via
- X — Route single track
- M — Move component
4. Design for Manufacturing (DFM)
Always check your fab house (JLCPCB, PCBWay, etc.) capabilities for minimum trace width and clearance before starting your layout. Configure these in the Design Rules Checker (DRC).
5. Place 3D Models for Fitting Checks
Always attach STEP or WRL 3D models to your footprints to preview your PCB assembly inside the 3D Viewer. This helps ensure physical clearance when housing your board in an enclosure.
